I would like to extend a warm welcome our new families to the school. We have had a smooth start to the year so far and students have settled back into routine well.
Congratulations to our Class of 2024
Our Year 12s continue to do us proud and last year was no exception. Last year we had a WACE achievement rate of 92%, above that of the state average (90%).
Seventeen of our students received a SCSA Award of Distinction or Merit and many of these students received the Principal’s Award at the end of 2024.
Marc Rouillard and Deveryn Stillisano received a Certificate of Distinction and Certificates of Merit went to Amelia Bell, Brooke Daljac, Jaxon Dullard. Phoebe Duncan. Jake Dunne. Lachlan Ellis. Savannah Friday, Ane Greyling, Leah Kuckelkorn, Joshua Rogers, Sidney Rudas, Brianna Salinas, Manami Teo, Amelie Tuohy, and Lucas Yeates.
85% of our students completed Year 12 with a Certificate II, III or IV and 40% of our ATAR students received an ATAR over 80.
Congratulations to all our Class of 2024, and we wish them well as they begin their next chapter in their lives.
Welcome back to our Italian Exchange student
We welcome back Darcy Hart who participated in the Italy tour (8 week exchange at the end of the year and over the Christmas holidays). She really enjoyed her time in Sardegna, attending school and exploring Italy. Thank you to Maria Pennington for all her support for this program and the students participating.

Building update
Progress has continued well over the school holidays with our building program. Works were completed near Design and Technologies to break into the new teaching block, and good progress has been made on the teaching block.
These before and after photos show progress since this time last year.

We were very excited to start the year in our new Visual Arts Centre. It is a spectacular building both inside and out. The students are really enjoying being in the new building.
Year 7 Values Week
I enjoyed visiting the Year 7 classes during the Values week to hear first-hand how well the students have settled into high school and present them with their school badge. During the week they enjoyed 2 days of activities at the Bickley Outdoor Recreation Centre to help demonstrate and build on our school values of Pride, Respect, Resilience, Love of Learning and Community. They also spent time at school having an induction to the library, some of our support services and getting their BYODs connected to the network.

Year 7 Swim trials and House Carnival
Year 7 swim trials are coming up on Friday 14 March in preparation for our Swimming Carnival on Friday 21 March. This event is competitors only and parents are welcome to come along as spectators on the day.
P&C news
We have an active P&C with a dedicated and enthusiastic group of parents. They would love you to join them and they meet twice a term on a Tuesday at 6.30pm. The upcoming meeting on Tuesday 18 March will be their AGM.
One of the main functions of the P&C has been managing the school canteen. This term the canteen will be transitioning their online ordering from Quikcliq to Spriggy Schools. You can find the link on the school website under the parents tab.
Connect
This is our main communication hub for our class teachers and year and program coordinators to place important information with each year group having their own page. A term calendar is also available on the school website and will be updated each term.
Contributions and Charges
I would like to thank those families who have already paid their school charges and contributions. For some families it might be easier to make arrangements to pay the balance over the year via a payment plan. Please contact our manager of Corporate Services, Natalie Robertson to finalise your account or to set up a payment plan. These funds are used to pay for teaching materials to deliver high quality programs for your child. All tuition, staffing and infrastructure costs are provided by the Department of Education.
Welcome to our new and returning staff
This year we have some new staff joining our school and we welcome Annaliese Tempest and Jeff Fu (Maths), Fiona Patten and Gi Soo Han (Science) and Connor Musto (D&T).
We also welcome back Emma Potts (Maths) from her leave in 2024 and welcome Ami Munekata as our new Language Assistant in Japanese this year.
Wishing everyone all the best for the term.

Year 11 and 12 Program Coordinator Report
Friday Period 1
Year 11 students have been assigned a meeting period on Fridays period 1. This is a scheduled class and so students are required to be in their classes as part of their attendance. This period will be used for things such as workshops, seminars, OLNA support, careers information and study support sessions
Year 12 students will be provided with a range of workshops and seminars across the year. These sessions relate to relevant WACE information, skills for productive study and careers information, along with strategies for time and stress management. Information pertaining to these sessions is distributed through Mentor and via Connect. All Year 12 students are expected to attend the sessions that are scheduled. If they’re not required for Friday period 1 then the expectation is for them to be here well in time for the start of their respective period 2 class.
The event schedule will be placed on Connect and updated regularly.
Mentor classes
It is really important that in Year 11 and 12 all students attend mentor class. This is where the majority of information will get disseminated and mentor teachers a really valuable resource for all students. Please make sure you get to mentor class each day.

I would like to just remind everybody that Year 11 and 12 can be a really demanding so as well as working to the best of their ability, it is crucial to have a good life balance. This includes things like including strategies to relieve the stress and pressure of senior schooling, being mentally and physically healthy to manage the demands of Year 11 and 12. Please feel free to contact me if things are getting on top of you so we can work out a plan, sooner rather than later.
“Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off of the goal.” ( Vince Lombardi)
We would like to give a warm welcome back to our Year 10 students as they embark on an exciting and challenging year ahead. There’s a lot in store for them, from course counselling to preparing for OLNA and exams, and the highly anticipated Year 10 Dinner Dance.
This year provides many opportunities for Year 10 students to start exploring potential career paths and to engage in programs that can help shape their future. Events like "Try a Trade" will give students the chance to experience hands-on careers in various fields, while career guidance and course counselling will help them begin to think about their next steps. Keep an eye on the notices on the Year 10 Connect page for any exciting opportunities.
Attendance Process
If your child is absent from school, please notify us as soon as possible. You can do so by:
- SMSing the school on 0407 384 039
- Emailing kalamunda.shs@education.wa.edu.au
Alternatively, after 11:00 AM, you will receive an absence SMS. You can simply click the link provided in this message and submit a reason for your child's absence. This allows us to accurately record and manage attendance for your child.
Uniform Expectations
It’s been fantastic to see so many students returning in their correct school uniforms. They all look very grown-up and proud in their light blue polo shirts. A quick reminder: only navy bottoms are allowed as part of the school uniform.
Good Standing and Rewards
It’s important to note that any issues related to unexplained absences or non-compliance with the uniform policy may impact your child’s Good Standing status. This could affect their eligibility to participate in school rewards and events throughout the year.
I look forward to supporting all Year 10 students as they navigate this important year of their education, full of learning and growth. Let’s make this a year of success!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at Teagen.Smith@education.wa.edu.au or 9293 6400.
Hi everyone!
I am very excited to be the new Year 8 Coordinator at Kalamunda SHS for 2025. I have been a Home Economics teacher here for the past 2 years, I love cooking and I love all things food! Some of my favourite things about Kalamunda SHS are the beautiful trees, the lovely new Art Building and our new cooking room in B3. It’s for upper school students, so still a few years away for our Year 8s!
In my new role as Year 8 Coordinator, I am excited to work closely with students, parents, and staff to ensure a smooth and successful year for all. In Term 2 we will commence our Bibbulmun Challenge, where we leave school for the day and do a big, long walk along the Bibbulmun track. It’s something that many Kalamunda students remember long afterwards. More info on that to come.
I look forward to meeting and working with you all, and I am always available if you have any questions. Find me in the Home Ec office or Student Services.
Best regards,
Sophie Bee
Year 8 Coordinator
Welcome everyone to Year 7 at Kalamunda Senior High School. Everyone seems to be settling in very well and I’ve been super impressed with the student’s start to high school. There is a lot to learn in the first few weeks, but all the children seem to be finding their way to their classrooms and around the school site. Some new friendships are already starting to form which is lovely to watch.
Our Values Week activities started in Week 2 at Bickley Outdoor Recreation Centre and back at school. The school values are respect, pride, resilience, love of learning and community and the children demonstrated all of these values and are continuing to do so. They all seemed to enjoy the activities on offer and the teachers were very grateful for the lovely weather. I was amazed by the adventurous nature of some of the children trying new challenging activities at Bickley. They are much braver than myself!

This term is very busy for the students with Swimming Trials coming up on 14th March and NAPLAN later in the term. In addition, the students will be having in school assessments during the term. You will be able to access the subject programs and assessment schedule on Connect so you are aware what is being studied during class time.
I have included a table below of the different clubs and activities that are on offer at school. Please ask your child to see their mentor teacher if they would be interested in attending.

Now that students have started their various courses of study, I would like to remind you of the importance of checking in with Connect. All course information, including course content and assessment outlines, can be sourced in the Library section of Connect. Teachers will also use Connect to post notices regarding assessment tasks and upload relevant learning tools.
All students continue to have access to Mathspace [http://mathspace.co/] in 2025, and it has been great to see many taking advantage of this wonderful resource to assist with their learning. Within Mathspace, there is a lesson function and a textbook, which can be used by students to keep up with their courses of study. Please contact your child’s teacher if login details have been forgotten over the summer holidays.
Maths Homework club is running on Wednesdays between 3 and 4pm. We encourage all students to come along and spend some time working on class work or Mathspace. The team will be happy to help answer any of your Maths related questions.

2025: THE YEAR AHEAD
Welcome back to a new year of challenging Science experiences bought to you by our dedicated team of Science Teachers and support staff.
Students will find that in addition to interesting encounters in the classroom learning, there will be opportunities to take things to the next level and explore new dimensions and experiences.
Some to look out for:
SCIENCE WEEK
Celebrated nation-wide from the 9th to the 17th of August, this year’s theme is…
‘Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language’
This theme invites students across Australia to delve into the mysteries of the Universe by exploring the fundamental languages of nature, including mathematics and the groundbreaking field of quantum science.
BIG SCIENCE COMPETITION
The Big Science Competition is open to students in Years 7 to 10 globally. It’s a 50-minute, mixed format online competition testing science knowledge, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Questions are set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable… and interesting!
ROBOTICS
This specialized program run by Mathematics and Science staff at Kalamunda Senior High School drew a keen audience last year. It is hands-on and involves designing and building programmable robot machinery capable of executing designated tasks. Our school team not only enjoyed themselves but also had great success in competitive environments. A highlight was the frisbee-throwing droids during Science Week. (Ours were like the one shown in the image).
Watch the Daily Notices for more information on these opportunities as the year progresses…

Back To School Routines Which Promote
Good Mental Health for Teens
Student Mental Health Challenges
Student mental health challenges such as anxiety, social anxiety, depression, stress, school refusal, and fear of school can be significant concerns for parents and students alike during the back-to-school season. As adolescents and teens prepare to return to the academic setting, it’s essential for parents like you to be aware of these potential difficulties. Understanding and addressing the impact of the challenges listed in this back-to-school guide and using the mental health checklist will enable you to help your child navigate their transition back to the classroom.
- Communicate
As the school year approaches, it’s important to keep the lines of communication open so you can best understand how your child is feeling and to build your emotional connection with them. When starting a conversation, keep in mind that if you’re asking questions, it could feel like an interrogation to your adolescent or teen. To ensure they’ll be more open to responding honestly and get them to start talking, try “I noticed” statements. For example, you could say, “I noticed you seem nervous about going back to school.”
As part of your communication process, practice active listening. Avoid multitasking to give your full attention to your adolescent or teen, face them with welcoming body language, and make eye contact in a relaxed, uncritical manner. Giving your undivided attention will help you listen attentively so you can paraphrase what’s said and withhold judgment and advice.
- Help them prioritize sleep & healthy eating habits
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, children ages 6-12 should get nine to 12 hours of sleep per night, while teens 13-18 should get eight to 10 hours. So, it’s important your adolescent or teen prioritizes getting good sleep as they head back to school. However, if your child is sleeping too much, that can affect their mental and physical well-being. Early start times at school can add to this issue, as an adolescent or teenager who’s always tired can have difficulty getting up for and functioning well in class.
To promote healthy sleep hygiene and habits, you can help your child develop a bedtime routine; encourage reduced caffeine use; limit social media and technology use; and encourage exercise, yoga, and mindfulness. Where possible it is good to maintain a scheduled bedtime on weekends; this helps to regulate their natural body clock, making it easier to wake up during the week.
Eating good, healthy food provides their bodies with vital nutrients and energy throughout the day, as well as supporting brain function for learning. When adolescents are stressed, it taxes their immune system making them susceptible to any viruses doing the rounds and school.
- Build a support network
Many adolescents, teenagers, and their families are carrying the burden of mental health issues alone. That’s because building a mental health support network can be difficult, as it can be tough to connect with and trust others. But that network can provide your child with essential support as they head back to class — and during the school year.
The people in your child’s support network should be active listeners who take your adolescent or teen’s well-being seriously. They should be people your family receives love and support from. You can find them in churches, at schools, on sports teams, or at other group activities.
- Encourage practicing gratitude
Practicing gratitude can be a powerful tool for adolescents and teens facing mental health challenges during the back-to-school season, as it can help shift their focus beyond the struggles or frustrations of life. By expressing appreciation for “the little things,” such as supportive friends or even the opportunity to learn, they can cultivate a more positive mindset and build their resilience. This allows them to navigate challenges with a more optimistic perspective. Consider encouraging your adolescent or teen to keep a gratitude journal or to do something as simple as creating a note on their phone that lists positive aspects about school so they can look at them on a regular basis.
- Establish a routine
Establishing a routine can greatly benefit adolescents and teens as they transition back to class, making it an important part of the mental health checklist in this back-to-school guide. Work with your child to create a structured schedule. When they implement it, they can experience several advantages:
- A sense of stability: A routine provides a sense of stability and predictability, which can help reduce anxiety and stress.
- Enhanced time management: Following a routine helps students effectively manage their time, allowing for a better balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments.
- Improved self-care: Incorporating self-care activities into the routine, such as exercise, relaxation techniques, and time for hobbies, can contribute to better mental health and overall well-being.
- Better focus and productivity: A structured routine helps adolescents and teens stay organized, prioritize tasks, and maintain focus, enhancing productivity and reducing feelings of overwhelm.
