Principal’s Report
With the Easter holidays just finished, it is hard to believe we are nearly at the end of the school term already. It has been a full and exciting time and I hope that our students and families are looking forward to a positive finish to the term.
Parent Teacher Meetings
On Tuesday 10 April we will be holding our Parent Teacher meetings, along with displays from the Universities and TAFE. We hope that you take the opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers and to work together with us in ensuring our student’s achieve the very best they can.
A family of otters
Our front office has recently been overrun with a family of otters. These beautiful ceramic animals have been created by Mr Eden’s Gifted and Talented Year 8 art class. We have all been allocated the job of caring for, or should I say – curating, these temporarily adopted pieces of artwork.
These are two of the pieces I have on display in my office.
Caring and thoughtful students
I would like to highlight and share with you a recent event. A few weeks ago, I was contacted by a member of the public letting me know that two of our students had assisted an elderly man who had fallen off his scooter in Kalamunda. I was told that these students picked him up and dusted him down and lifted the scooter back up for him. The feedback was that these students where really nice young gentlemen. Congratulations to these students on their good deed.
Cause to be proud
This year we have two Year 12 students from last year, Grace Fowler and Anja Kovacevic, selected for exhibition in the prestigious Year 12 Perspectives exhibition. You read about this further in this issue and I encourage you to visit their work in the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Connor Norregaard and Aiden Boots (both Year 8) who have been selected to play in the 2018 Water Polo National Club Championships in the U14 team.
Drew Mann and Hayden Schwinkowski (both Year 9), Jade Mann (Year 11) and Freya Jonker (Year 10) who have been selected in the state swimming team for the National event.
Tom Rubery – who received a Silver Medal in the Under 15s at the 2018 MTBA Cross Country National Championships in NSW.
Term highlights
The term has been full of a variety of events and activities, including class excursions and incursions, House and Interschool Swimming Carnivals, Parent evenings, presentations, and of course the Year 12 school ball. In addition we have begun our Year 8 Bibbulmun Challenge and Year 9 Triple Challenge with the cooler weather and will be holding our Dance Show and KPA Junior Showcase performances shortly. The Greatest Shave is another big highlight of the term and we thank Desi and her band of helpers for their work in ensuring this was a great success.
Harmony Day
With our school values of Respect and Community, we are encouraged to be mindful of others, especially those who are different from ourselves. Whether that be different by cultural background, race, language, disability, family background, gender, sexual orientation or just different from us and our own upbringing. Harmony Day is a way of celebrating diversity and you can read about the range of activities undertaken in this issue. Thank you to our language teachers and students for helping us celebrating this important day.
National Day against Bullying and Violence
Friday 16 March we participated as a school in the National Day against Bullying and Violence. It was a great opportunity to remind us that bullying and violence are harmful and don’t have a place in our school or wider society. I was encouraged by the student voices on the wall of comments, and especially by those who encouraged bystanders to take action and those who gave positive messages to the victims of bullying to be resilient, stay strong, believe in themselves and not to listen to mean comments. Thank you all those who were involved in making this such a successful event, especially to our student councillors and Jenny our school psychologist.
Open Day
The school is hosting an open day for prospective students on 4 May 2018.

ANZAC Day Assembly
During our last week of term, we will be holding our annual ANZAC day assembly to remember all who have fought for our country and the sacrifices they made for us to experience freedom. All parents are welcome to attend. It is always a memorable occasion and this year one of our Year 12 students Vy Nguyen will be travelling to Vietnam on the Premier’s Anzac Tour and we wish Vy all the best for her travels.
We also have two student tour groups travelling over the school holidays. There is a language trip to Malaysia with Mrs Kaler and an Art tour to Melbourne with Mrs Wittber Mrs Hamilton and Mr Meaden. We wish all these students and staff accompanying them a safe and enjoyable trip and look forward to hearing their exciting adventures next term.
To all our families and students, I hope the term has ended well and whether you are travelling or staying at home, hope you have a wonderful holiday break.

Senior School Report
Term 1 has been a busy but smooth start for our Senior School students. They have quickly got back into the routine of school, study and incursions during meeting periods. These are aimed at providing the students with essential skills to support them in achieving the best results possible and supporting their transition to life after school.
We are looking forward to using the Leavers Jackets towards the end of term. They will soon become a permanent uniform staple for the Year 12s, ensuring they are easily identified as the class of 2018.
A smooth round of OLNA testing has just been completed and it is extremely important to remember that students will have to pass the OLNA in order to achieve their WACE. We have in place support programs and specialist teachers to work with those students needing to pass this test.
The end of Term 1 means we are getting close to Interim Reports, examinations and work experience. Even though we have had a good start to the year so far, it is still vital for all Senior School students to heed information gained during the incursions provided. They should ensure that all work is handed in on time, and that they put in the required effort and study time needed to give themselves every chance to succeed.

Year 11 Report
Term 1 has flown by so quickly and the Year 11s have adjusted well to the demands of their new courses. By now you will have received an email with a link to your child’s Interim Reports which should give you a good indication of how your child is progressing. We will also be monitoring these reports to identify any students who may be struggling. If your child is at risk, or you feel is not coping, please feel free to contact me and we can arrange a meeting to discuss it. It is always good to address the issues sooner rather than later.
As the weather starts to get cooler just a reminder about uniform. Only school jumpers are to be worn. The long waited school track suits pants are on order, and we will notify the school community when they are available to purchase.
I hope everyone has a great, relaxing break ready for the demands of Term 2.

Year 10 Report
KSHS Good Standing
For students to have the best chance of success at high school, it is essential that they work to the best of their ability and do their best to maintain the Kalamunda Senor High School standards of performance.
Academic Performance:
Demonstrate the following Attitude, Behaviour and Effort (ABE) consistently or often:
- “Works to the best of your ability”
- “Actively participates in learning”
Attendance:
Attendance 90% or above with no unexplained absences.
Conduct:
Maintain consistently good conduct across the school including:
- respecting school expectations and values (Love of Learning, Respect, Resilience, Pride and community);
- respecting the rights of others;
- appropriate organisation and preparation; and
- appropriate use of class time.
Uniform:
- Wearing full school uniform at all times.
Please check your child’s Student Planner for information about maintaining Student Good Standing to ensure that your child will be included in the reward at the end of this term. I would to encourage a particular focus on wearing appropriate school uniform this semester.
Study Skills - Elevate
Year 10 Students attended a Study Skills session presented by enthusiastic guest speakers from Elevate Education on Friday 2 March – Week 5. Your child will have filled out a booklet of information regarding 3 Steps to achieving their personal best:
- The 4 Rules for Learning - Trigger words;
- The 3 Rules for Mastering Learning; and
- Creating.

Year 10 Assembly
Our Year 10 Councillors and House Captains run our Year 10 Assemblies. Year 10 students will continue to be rewarded for their positive efforts at school with Kala Credits from their teachers on our Academy Roll System. This may be for good behaviour, effort, correct uniform, attendance, or other positive contributions to their schooling.
Each Kala Credit represents 1 House Point, which will be collated at the end of each term – the House earning the most points receives a reward.

Middle School Report
Middle School Assembly
We have had our first Middle School Assembly and had a host of awards to present. The Middle School merit awards are based on our five School Values and teachers will be monitoring students to see who our worthy winners will be each term. I would like to congratulate the winners and hope these awards may inspire some other students to strive that little bit harder. This started on Thursday 22 March with Mentor Groups 8.2 and 8.3 taking on the day in what ended up being pretty warm and humid conditions. We all got through it and they certainly modelled our values of Respect and Resilience as they worked really well with each other and got everyone through the day.

As a final reminder, can you please ensure that your students have their School Planner and are using it. A great way to check is to write a note in it and have them get the teachers to sign it. This is a great communication tool and also helps to develop those planning skills which are becoming more vital in an ever changing employment market.

Year 9 Report
It has been a busy term for the Year 9s with a variety of incursions and excursions taking place. Most recently I had the pleasure of accompanying the Year 9 Leaders to the GRIP Leadership Conference at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. The students took part in a range of activities and discussions around how they can use their roles to encourage participation, pride, and positive contributions within our school community. This resulted in some very enthusiastic discussion taking place on the bus journey back to school about how the ideas shared in the workshops could being implemented in our own school. It was also great to see the students share their enthusiasm and experiences from the day with the rest of the cohort when they spoke at our Year 9 assembly. I look forward to seeing their ideas being developed further over the course of the year.
We also had our first Girls’ Triple Challenge take place in Week 8. This term the activities consisted of netball, raft building, and a bike ride around the river. Triple Challenge is offered to all Year 9 students taking place each term. It gives an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, not only with physical activities, but also with teamwork. It has been run for several years now by our school chaplain Desi and is always a positive experience for those who take part.
With interim reports being distributed this term and NAPLAN coming up next it is a good time for students to reflect on their progress so far and if they are on track to meet their learning goals. The student planners are an excellent resource for goal tracking, study strategies and organisation. I would strongly encourage all students to use them and will be reiterating this to the cohort during mentor and at our next assembly.

Year 8 Report
This term has absolutely flown by and the students have made a great transition into Year 8. It has been a really busy term with lots of opportunity to get involved in the school community. A major highlight was the support shown by the Year 8 students during the World’s Greatest Shave. It was amazing to see all the students cheer each other on and participate to help a good cause.
We have also started the Bibulmun Challenge with Mentor 8.2 and 8.3 in Week 8. It was a great day with both Mentors showing resilience in overcoming challenges experienced on the walk. The encouragement and support these students gave to each other was phenomenal and all staff were really proud of their perseverance. I encourage all Year 8s to make the most of this opportunity to help gain a perspective of the journey through high school and help develop our school values . They should return their permission forms promptly once they are handed out to their mentor in the upcoming weeks.
I would also like to remind all Year 8s about attendance and how this affects Good Standing. One of the criteria surrounding Good Standing is maintaining 90% attendance or higher. In order to achieve this, students should aim for no more than five days of absences within a term which are explained. More than five days will require a medical certificate in order to maintain good standing.
Our amazing cohort has also contributed to many house points this term by showing their school values. It has been great to see the number of merit points increase throughout the term with Draco currently in the lead followed closely by Pegasus. I look forward to us continuing to celebrate the great work of these students throughout Term 2.

Student Services Report
Senior School Leadership Workshop
The Senior School Leadership group had a workshop on the Art and Science of Public Speaking on Monday 26 March.
Topics covered in the workshop were; speech topic, speech structure, delivery techniques and managing nerves. The workshop was delivered by Joanne Turbett from UpArrow Consulting.
Students played an interactive board game to practice what they had learnt and the session concluded with some students presenting a speech to the rest of the group and getting feedback from the presenter at the end.
The Year 9 Leadership group attended the Grip Leadership Conference on Monday 19 March and the Year 7 and 8 Leadership groups will be attending a workshop in Term 2.

Attendance letters have gone out to students whose attendance was under 90% with unexplained absences.
It is important to remember that if your child is absent from school that you ring up and explain the absence so that your child does not lose Good Standing if they have a legitimate reason for being away. The absentee number is 92936409.

Career Corner
The new Basics a report by the Foundation for Young Australians in 2017 identified the future need of workers to possess Enterprise skills. It is thought that there will be a 70% increase in time spent using enterprise skills while at work. For students it is important to find examples throughout their day of how they have demonstrated these skills in a real life.

The real life examples can help to build their Curriculum Vitae or resume to gain employment. It could be finding an example in Mathematics where they had to solve a difficult problem and engaged with other students and their teacher to find ways of solving the problem. How they demonstrated their critical thinking skills to research a topic in Health or worked collaboratively to deliver a project in English or Art.
For help with developing a resume, Skillsroad is a fantastic resource to assist students to build their evidence and develop a professional resume. There are also a range of supporting documents for parents to not only help with the resume but a variety of career education and other tools on the website.

Students’ views on school and learning - South Metro seminar
A FREE seminar hosted by the Commissioner for Children and Young People outlining the findings of a consultation with 1,812 WA primary and secondary students undertaken with support from the Department of Education, CEWA and AISWA. The report identifies the factors that influence engagement in school and learning and key findings all education sectors need to consider.

News from the School Psychologist
This term has been busy with mental health initiatives.
Firstly we ran our National Day Against Bullying on 16 March, along with approximately 2500 other schools across Australia.
The students were invited to write positive FaceBook posts on our wall and to write ways to ‘Imagine a World Free of Bullying’. The students embraced the idea and the wall looked great. We also were provided by an anti-bullying dance routine by two students and our talented music students provided lunchtime music. We also set out picnic blankets and provided free fruit kebabs for those enjoying the music.
We ran a competition to name our dolphin and the winning entry was PiMA, which stands for Positive Mental Health. PiMA returned to the Convention Centre for the weekend to join the others as part of The Big Splash WA.

On Sunday 18 March the public were invited to view all the school dolphins along with the larger ones painted by local artists. It was an amazing sight and there were some truly awesome dolphins. PiMA is now back at Kalamunda SHS and we will work on finding it a permanent spot around the grounds.

Act – do some yoga, dance, kick the
footy, solve a Sudoku puzzle.
Belong – join a local book club or sporting group,
organise a family gathering or a picnic with friends.

Gifted and Talented Visual Arts





Gifted and Talented Visual Art students have been working hard this term in the Saturday workshops and producing exceptional results as usual. As well as producing great results in their workshops, select students Briony Bray, Ami Webb and Patrick McQuaid were part of The Girl Empowerment Expo, where we set up a stall and spoke to the general public about the importance of Visual Arts in adolescent health and well-being. The expo was held at the Guildford Town Hall on a Sunday and the students represented our school by promoting the program, speaking about the structure of the classes and talking about their own artwork which was on display. Briony even managed to sell some work! I thank these students for their dedication to the school and Gifted and Talented Visual Arts as working all weekend can be very tiring.
Year 9 and 10 Gifted and Talented Visual Art students also attended Sculpture by the Sea on 19 March. They heard some very informative artist talks by Gordon Mitchell and Mikaela Castledine. The students participated in some analysis activities and a scavenger hunt based on some carefully collected photographs. All had a wonderful day and commented that some of the sculptures were executed beautifully.

Tuesday 20 March was the opening night of the annual Perspectives exhibition held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
Congratulations to Grace Fowler and Anja Kovacevic (Graduates of 2017) who had their work selected into this very prestigious showcase of the best artwork from students throughout Western Australia.

Music News
Recently some of our wonderful music students toured to Kalamunda Primary School and Maida Vale Primary School to promote the KPA specialist program. The students performed brilliantly and we were very proud to showcase the musical talent that we have in abundance here at Kalamunda SHS.
On Monday 19 March the KSHS music parent support group ‘MusiKal’ had our annual general meeting. It was fantastic to meet some new parents and set the scene for 2018. MusiKal executive committee was then dissolved and nominations called for all executive positions.
Newly appointed positions were voted in as the following:
- President: Marcus Roberts nominated by Michelle Vivian, seconded by Felicity Kingston.
- Vice President: Michelle Vivian nominated by Andrea Doust, seconded by Marcus Roberts.
- Treasurer: Helen Addison nominated by Michelle Vivian, seconded Felicity Kingston.
- Secretary: Alex Stevens nominated by Felicity Kingston, seconded by Toni Stanley.
- General committee members: Andrea Doust, Toni Stanley, Felicity Kingston, Peter Rudolph.
Alex Stevens does a brilliant job as our MusiKal secretary and she can be contacted at janda@iinet.net.au for any enquiries about purchase of music uniform shirts or getting involved with MusiKal. A big thank you goes to Tracy Holland for helping out on photo day with the new shirts. This is also a timely reminder to check that all performing music students have their performance shirts already or ordered and that all students also have black formal pants and black neat performance shoes.
Our first major music performance is our mid year concert which will be in the KPAC on Tuesday 19 June.

Kalamunda Performing Arts News
2018 is off to a wonderful start for our KPA students. We welcome our new Year 7s to the program with 25 KPA Music students and 20 KPA General students. Our Year 7s and 8s are busy at work preparing for our Junior Showcase which will be held at the Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre in the evening of Monday 9 April. Ticket details will be released early next week.
On Wednesday the 28 February, Ms Vivian and Ms Head took all of the Year 8 KPA students on a Primary School Tour of Maida Vale PS and Kalamunda PS to promote the tour with a talk and musical and dance performance. All students performed to the best of their ability and we are so proud of each and every one of them for doing the school proud.
Details for our annual production will be released very soon. Over 30 students have auditioned for the lead roles so far. There is a lot of talent in the KPA family, and I am looking forward to working with all the students to bring this production to life.

Italian Update
Harmony Day at Kalamunda SHS
Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.
Held every year on 21 March, the Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone. Kalamunda SHS is a school that offers three wonderful languages; Italian, Indonesian and Japanese. All our Foreign Language students are reminded of the importance of cultural diversity and languages.
Living together in harmony
To live peacefully and happily in Australia, we have to make sure that everyone feels equal. It does not matter how different we are, we should always treat others with fairness and respect.
Some people might look or dress differently from you. Try to learn more about other people’s cultures and customs. Remember, differences are not a bad thing. They make us unique and special.
Harmony Day fast facts
- Did you know that since 1945 over seven million people have migrated to Australia?
- Harmony Day takes place on the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
- Did you know that Harmony Day began in 1999 and since then more than 25,000 Harmony Day events have been held across the country?

- Often, before an event, function or meeting takes place, Australians will acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land they are on. This is called an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ and it pays respect to Aboriginal culture and heritage.
Guest Speaker for Harmony Day
Our Year 8 Italian, Indonesian and Japanese Language students and Year 12 Business students welcomed Sue Jetta, Aboriginal Elder as a guest speaker. Sue did a Welcoming in Noongar language and discussed the importance of all cultures and languages. Students learnt and practiced Noongar words and had the opportunity to ask Sue questions about Aboriginal history, customs and symbolism. We thank you Sue for visiting Kalamunda SHS on such a meaningful and celebrated day!

Italian Incursion: Little Miss Squeeze Box
Not many people know about the history of the piano accordian. The first accordion to feature a piano keyboard was probably the instrument introduced in 1852 by Bouton of Paris. Another source claimed the first piano accordion was introduced in 1854 at the Allegemeine Deutsche Industrieausstellung in Munich. It was showcased by the instrument builder Mattäus Bauer and quickly became a serious competitor to button accordions. The first chromatic piano-like accordions in Russia were built in 1871 by Nikolay Ivanovich Beloborodov.
Italian students, Years 9 to 11 watched a special musical performance by renowned piano accordionist, Nikki D’Agostino. Students really enjoyed her showcase of traditional European songs to modern day music that we all recognised. Nikki has performed with famous musicians such as John Legend, Stevie Wonder and the Foo Fighters. She has travelled around the world, entertaining various groups of people, including performing for Andrea Bocelli. Nikki is so talented that she was asked to join Lady Gaga’s band a few months ago. Nikki also allowed students to try and play her accordian! A big applause goes out our very own to Ro!
Lastly, Nikki also taught the students to dance the Tarantella. It was a very cultural experience where everybody was enthusiastic and demonstrated a love of learning languages!

Bahasa Indonesia Year 8 classes speaking skills
Role-play: Conversation at the basketball club
Students in both my Year 8 classes had to complete a role-play without using palm cards. They worked in pairs and prepared a dialogue at a basketball club including the following criteria in their dialogue:
- greet others;
- introduce yourself;
- enquire about how old the other person is;
- talk about where you come and where you live;
- exchange phone numbers; and
- saying goodbye.
They had three lessons to prepare and to present it. Below are some photos of the students doing their presentation in front of their peers. Well done to both the classes. No palm-cards were used. Great work. Hebat!





Bahasa Indonesia Year 7 classes speaking skills
Role –play: Introducing each other.
In the first few weeks of Term 1, both Year 7 Indonesian classes started with studying basic Indonesian, about introducing themselves and others to class. They then a did a role-play using all the necessary phrases and vocabulary learnt in this role-paly. The criteria included:
- greeting each other;
- asking how they are;
- what class they are in;
- where they were born;
- where they live now;
- likes / dislikes; and
- how old they are.
Below are photos of their great presentation to class. Some were able to speak without using any palm-cards while other still needed to use them, for now!

Tourism Excursion
The Year 11 and 12 Tourism students spent Friday 23 March exploring Fremantle through the eyes of a tourist. They participated in an Indigenous Walking Tour exploring the rich cultural history that Fremantle has to Noongar People. Then they visited the Fremantle Markets identifying the importance of Tourism to the WA economy as well as sampling many of the culinary delights. Lastly the students visited the Old Fremantle Prison where they developed an understanding of Fremantle’s convict past. Well done to the students who attended the excursion as they represented Kalamunda SHS in a positive way.

Zoo Excursion
On 16 March, the Year 11 ATAR Biology students went to the Perth Zoo to learn about the role of the Zoo in conserving biodiversity in the South West of WA and classification of organisms. The students began their day with a fabulous presentation on the Zoo’s captive breeding programs. We discussed the challenges faced by the Zoo to assist in ensuring the continual survival of many threatened species including the numbat and black cockatoo. The students particularly enjoyed the visit by one of the Black Cockatoos housed at Perth Zoo and also a very inquisitive kangaroo. After the seminar, students went off in groups to collect observations of the diverse animals and complete activities surrounding the classification of species. Students gained deeper understanding of the diversity in organisms and experienced firsthand the role of different agencies in the fight to conserve our unique flora and fauna.

Each year the Perth Zoo offers students the chance to work with professional Zoo staff behind the scenes. Designed for the animal enthusiast who has an interest in a life after school working with all creatures great and small, the program includes the following:
